Collaborations with Devin KKenny

Flyers, Brochures, Album Covers

2008 - 2013

Devin Kenny is a friend and colleague who creates music and performance art under the pseudonym of Devin KKenny. I've frequently collaborated with him to produce both promotional flyers for his live shows and supporting material for his albums.

His work is eclectic, self-aware, and carefully treads the line between music and performance art. My challenge was to make our design work reflect that.

Studio Workout volume 2

Booklet, 5.5" × 8.5"

Working with the concept of "Art Swag", Devin wanted to create a fictional narrative of hip-hop brashness and self-aggrandizement (Swag), but for a stereotypical artist as opposed to a stereotypical rapper.

To achieve this, we worked to design around the conceit of a feature profile in an art magazine (the logotype is a reference to Artforum), except with large portions of the pages cropped away. Song lyrics are set as body text, while the rest of the copy is dummy text set in Dingbats, as a reference to David Carson's work on Ray Gun.

In The End Summer

Cassette Insert

Devin approached me with the title of his album, and his themes of memory and playfulness (and the memory of play). He wanted me to interpret them however I wished for a cassette insert. I decided to reference the work of outsider artist Henry Darger, and "modernize" it with the stereotypical image of summer playfulness (sexy girls at the beach).
